Honouring My Pet & Self Care
We don't move on from our loss, we carry our grief move forward
Honour their Memory While Caring for Your Needs
As you navigate this season of grief, it’s important to remember that honouring your pet’s memory and caring for your own emotional and physical well-being can go hand in hand. Let's look at some ways to celebrate your pet’s life while tending to your own needs during this challenging time.
Honoring Your Pet’s Memory
You may wish to creating meaningful rituals or keepsakes to help you celebrate the love and joy your pet brought into your life. Here are some ideas to honour their memory:
Curate your Memories
- Commission or create an artwork that showcases your pet to display in your home.
- Create a memory box or scrapbook with keepsakes of your time together that you may go through and reflect on.
Write a Tribute
- Pen a letter to your pet, sharing your gratitude and love for them.
- Write a story or poem about your time together, capturing your favourite memories.
Donate in Their Name
- Volunteer with an animal shelter or rescue organisation to honour your pet’s legacy.
- Make an annual donation to a local animal rescue on your late pet's birthday or death anniversary
Create a Keepsake
- Have their paw print preserved in clay or ink.
- Turn their collar or tags into a piece of jewelry or ornament.
Host a Memorial
- Gather close friends or family for a ceremony to share stories and celebrate your pet’s life.
Daily or Anniversary Rituals
- Have a dedicated spot in your home where you can perform a daily ritual like lighting a candle and reflecting in your time together.
- Visit their favourite place and spend some moments there.
- Bring treats to thank the vet clinics and other professionals who cared for your pet.
Prioritising Self-Care During Grief
Grieving the loss of a pet can take a toll on your emotional and physical well-being. Taking care of yourself is essential as you process your loss.
- Acknowledge Your Emotions
- Allow yourself to feel whatever emotions arise—sadness, anger, guilt, or even relief.
- Remind yourself that grief is not linear, and it’s okay to have good and bad days.
- Reach Out for Support
- Talk to friends or family members who understand your bond with your pet.
- Consider joining a pet loss support group or seeking professional counseling.
- Maintain Daily Routines
- Stick to regular meals, sleep schedules, and exercise, even when it feels difficult.
- Structure can provide a sense of stability during an emotionally turbulent time.
- Engage in Gentle Activities
- Spend time in nature, journal your feelings, or practice mindfulness.
- Engage in hobbies or activities that bring you a sense of comfort and relaxation.
- Be Kind to Yourself
- Recognise that healing takes time, and there’s no “right” way to grieve.
- Avoid judging yourself for how you feel or how long your grieving process lasts.
- Don't expect yourself to maintain your usual capacity and performance at work, school or other duties
Honouring your pet’s memory and caring for yourself may feel like very different tasks. However, they can coexist. I like to ask my clients to think about what their pet would tell them if they could send a message back from Rainbow Bridge - how would their pet like them to care for themselves, or remember your special relationship?
Moving Forward with Love
The bond you shared with your pet doesn’t end with their passing. You can carry their love forward while finding peace in your own time. Remember, grief is a testament to the love you shared, and healing is a process that deserves patience and kindness.
